Lewiston, Maine— January 21, 2020 — In April of 2019, the Department of Defense (DoD) implemented an interim rule that modified the Department of Defense Federal acquisitions Regulation Supplement (DFARS) as it relates to new restrictions on the acquisition of tungsten powder and products from certain countries. The final rule was released and made public on December 31, 2019, to adopt and fully implement the modification to DFARS. The materials covered by the DFAR rule change include samarium-cobalt magnets, neodymium-iron-boron magnets, tungsten metal powder, tungsten heavy alloy, and any material, finished or semi-finished containing tungsten heavy alloy that is either melted or produced in Russia, Ian, China or North Korea.
Elmet Technologies, a 100% U.S. owned and based, a fully integrated producer of tungsten and molybdenum is committed to supporting the DoD and its prime contractors with US-produced tungsten in compliance with the new DFARS. As the only U.S. owned and operated, fully integrated producer of pure tungsten and molybdenum, all Elmet Technologies tungsten and tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) materials are compliant with the standards outlined by Section 871 of the 2019 NDAA and the new finalized DRAF. Specifically, all of Elmet’s tungsten powder and tungsten products are produced at its facility in Lewiston, Maine. Additionally, all of Elmet’s raw materials are obtained from certified conflict-free resources and countries.

About Elmet: Established in 1929, Elmet Technologies LLC is a 100% US owned and operated, fully integrated primary manufacturer of molybdenum, tungsten products, and alloys. Elmet was formerly Royal Philips’ US tungsten/moly production facility. At our 220,000 square foot plant in Lewiston, Maine USA, Elmet’s manufacturing begins with molybdenum and tungsten chemical precursors which are reduced in-house to pure metal powders. We have a full chemical plant and large capacity powder reduction furnaces. We utilize state-of-the-art powder metallurgy processes to dope (if required), press, sinter roll, and swage the powder to fully dense mill products. We are the only US-based moly and tungsten manufacturer that produces both flat and long/round mill products under one roof making plate, sheet, and foil flat-rolled products plus rod and wire. We have industry-leading machining, fabrication, and assembly capabilities.
